Ousmane Dembele has played down reports of a growing rivalry with fellow France international Kylian Mbappe, insisting there is no personal problem between the two players despite speculation surrounding their competition for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Dembele addressed the issue on Thursday, October 1, 2026, during a press conference ahead of France’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Italy. He said he was not interested in the online arguments being created around the two players and suggested that much of the perceived tension existed mainly on social media.
The rumours emerged after comments Mbappe made in an interview with France Football were interpreted by some observers as a subtle reference to Dembele’s rise in the Ballon d’Or conversation.
Mbappe was reportedly asked about the fact that few people would have expected Dembele to eventually win the award ahead of him. The Real Madrid forward acknowledged Dembele’s progress while also referring to the perception that he had long been regarded as a leading candidate for football’s biggest individual prize.
The comments generated considerable discussion online, with some supporters interpreting them as evidence of tension between the two French stars.
Dembele, however, said he had spoken directly with Mbappe about the matter and did not view it as a serious disagreement. He explained that the subject had come up naturally because the two players sit beside each other when the France squad gathers.
Mbappe has also previously rejected suggestions that there is a serious dispute between them, further playing down speculation about their relationship.
The Ballon d’Or competition has nevertheless created an interesting storyline involving the two France internationals. Dembele won the 2025 men’s Ballon d’Or after an outstanding campaign with Paris Saint-Germain, becoming the sixth Frenchman to claim the prestigious award. UEFA confirmed that he finished ahead of Lamine Yamal and PSG teammate Vitinha in the 2025 voting.
The 2026 award is now the focus, with both Dembele and Mbappe among the high-profile players being discussed in connection with the prize. The 2026 ceremony is scheduled for October 26 in London.
The latest exchange comes at an interesting time for the French national team, which is now being coached by former France captain Zinedine Zidane. Zidane took charge of the national side in 2026 following the departure of Didier Deschamps.
France’s preparations for the Nations League fixture against Italy have also been affected by Mbappe’s absence. The Real Madrid forward had been dealing with a knee injury and was unavailable for the match, leaving Dembele to take on a more prominent leadership role within the squad.
Rather than portraying Mbappe’s absence as an advantage, Dembele has continued to speak positively about what his fellow forward contributes to the national team.
The latest comments appear to have put the focus back on football rather than the social-media speculation surrounding the two players. While the Ballon d’Or race may continue to generate comparisons between the French stars, Dembele’s message is that there is no personal conflict behind the competition.
