The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) announced the development in Abuja, describing it as a moment of pride for the country, the African continent and the international cancer community.
In a congratulatory statement signed by its president, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, the society attributed Shinkafi-Bagudu’s emergence to years of commitment to cancer advocacy, strategic leadership and efforts to improve access to cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care.
Through her work as a medical professional and cancer advocate, Shinkafi-Bagudu has promoted cancer awareness, supported patients, mobilised resources and advocated stronger policies to address gaps in Nigeria’s cancer care system.
The NCS noted that her new position presents an opportunity to give greater international attention to Africa’s cancer control priorities, particularly the challenges confronting low- and middle-income countries.
The society also expressed optimism that her leadership would strengthen cancer advocacy organisations across Africa, amplify the concerns of patients and survivors, and promote fairer access to quality cancer services regardless of location or financial circumstances.
It described the achievement as both a source of national pride and a reminder of the need to intensify efforts against cancer, which continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Nigeria and across Africa.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to working with national, regional and international partners to reduce the cancer burden through public education, research, advocacy, capacity building and improved access to healthcare.
The appointment is expected to provide a stronger platform for African perspectives in international cancer policy discussions and support broader efforts to address inequalities in cancer prevention and treatment.
Shinkafi-Bagudu’s emergence represents a landmark moment for Nigerian healthcare advocacy, with stakeholders hopeful that her presidency will help advance more inclusive and effective cancer control initiatives worldwide.
