In a condolence message issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Obioha as a patriot whose contribution to the struggle for democracy came at considerable personal cost.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Obioha’s family and community, as well as the people of Abia State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, members of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other Nigerians mourning his death.
The President particularly highlighted Obioha’s role in the pro-democracy movement that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
According to Tinubu, Obioha was among the Nigerians who stood firmly behind the demand for democratic governance during one of the most difficult periods in the country’s political history.
The President said the late NADECO chieftain remained committed to democracy, justice, constitutional rule and the right of Nigerians to choose their leaders despite the pressure and difficulties associated with the struggle.
Tinubu also described Obioha as part of a generation of Nigerians who accepted the responsibility of standing up for the country during challenging times.
He said their sacrifices played an important role in the eventual restoration of democratic governance and should not be forgotten by succeeding generations.
“Chief Ralph Obioha was a courageous Nigerian who made sacrifices for democracy and remained committed to the ideals of a better Nigeria,” Tinubu said in the condolence message.
The President said Obioha’s death was a loss not only to his immediate family but also to his community and the wider Nigerian nation.
Tinubu said the late politician would be remembered for his courage, convictions, public service and belief in Nigeria.
He also prayed for strength and comfort for Obioha’s family and loved ones while asking God to grant the deceased eternal rest.
The President’s tribute comes as Nigeria continues to remember members of the pro-democracy generation whose activities helped sustain the demand for democratic rule during the years following the annulment of the June 12 election.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remember Obioha’s legacy as an example of the courage and sacrifice required to build and preserve a democratic society.
