According to Okeke, the scheme has recorded significant growth since its introduction in 2006. During its first year, MANCAP certified 1,930 products from 458 companies, compared with the 17,866 products and 8,634 companies recorded in certifications and revalidations to date.
He said the figures reflected the programme’s role in strengthening quality assurance and supporting the development of local manufacturing.
MANCAP was introduced on January 1, 2006, to promote fair competition among locally manufactured products, protect consumers from substandard goods and ensure value for money. It also supports efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy by strengthening confidence in locally produced goods.
As SON’s mandatory certification programme for locally manufactured products, MANCAP assesses products against the requirements of relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards. The initiative is designed to discourage the production and sale of unsafe or substandard goods while improving consumer confidence in Made-in-Nigeria products.
The 2026 ceremony also marked the introduction of the National MANCAP Quality Award, which recognises companies that have maintained compliance with the scheme over periods of 10, 15 and 20 years.
Held under the theme, “Building Trust in Quality and Safety Ecosystem,” the event celebrated manufacturers whose sustained commitment to standards contributes to consumer protection, industrial development and the competitiveness of Nigerian products.
Okeke said SON would continue to strengthen conformity assessment, support local manufacturers and promote an environment in which Nigerian products could compete effectively in domestic and international markets.
He added that the next phase of MANCAP would focus on making quality a defining feature of Nigerian manufacturing as the country works to expand its industrial capacity.
