Elon Musk is returning to an official advisory role within the Trump administration through a new Pentagon initiative examining the future of warfare.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Project Meridian during a “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia on September 30, naming Musk, defense technology entrepreneur Palmer Luckey and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the project's co-leaders.

The initiative is designed to look beyond current military planning and identify technologies and capabilities that the United States may require in future conflicts. Hegseth said the project would draw on expertise from technology, academia, policy and other parts of the private sector.

According to the Pentagon, the project will examine emerging areas of warfare and help identify capabilities that could be developed, tested and deployed in the years ahead. The work is expected to produce findings within 120 days, with the Pentagon planning both an unclassified report and a classified annex.

Musk's appointment marks his first formal return to government work since he left the Department of Government Efficiency, commonly known as DOGE, in 2025.

Musk had become one of President Donald Trump's most prominent political allies during Trump's 2024 presidential campaign and early period in office. Their relationship later deteriorated publicly, particularly over disagreements surrounding Trump's spending legislation. Musk subsequently stepped away from his government role.

His new Pentagon assignment, however, places him back inside an official government initiative focused on technology and national security.

Musk will work alongside Palmer Luckey, the co-founder of defence technology company Anduril Industries, and Gingrich, the former Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives. The three will operate as co-leaders while working with additional specialists selected from technological, academic and policy circles.

The choice of Musk and Luckey is particularly notable because both entrepreneurs already have significant relationships with the US defence establishment. SpaceX provides launch and satellite-related services to the US government, while Anduril develops defence technologies and autonomous systems for military customers.

Project Meridian is part of a wider set of military initiatives announced by Hegseth at Quantico. The Pentagon also announced plans for an Autonomous Warfare Command, intended to accelerate the development and deployment of autonomous and robotic systems across the US military.

The Pentagon says Project Meridian will focus on anticipating changes in the character of warfare and determining which technological capabilities could be important for future battlefields. The project is therefore intended as a forward-looking study rather than an announcement of a specific new weapons programme.

Musk's involvement has also attracted attention because of the existing government contracts held by companies associated with two of the project's leaders. Reports have noted that SpaceX and Anduril already do substantial defence business with the US government, making the project's composition a subject of public scrutiny.

The Pentagon has given the project a four-month deadline to produce its initial findings. Those recommendations are expected to help inform US decisions about emerging technologies and military capabilities as Washington prepares for potential changes in the nature of warfare.
