Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has praised teachers across the state for their dedication and sacrifices, assuring them that his administration will continue to prioritise their welfare and improve the quality of education.

Okpebholo made the pledge in a message marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day on Monday, October 5.

The governor described teachers as central to the development of society, stressing that the future of children and young people depends largely on the quality of education and support they receive.

He commended teachers in public schools for continuing to serve despite the challenges associated with the profession, noting that their responsibilities go beyond classroom teaching to include shaping the character, values and skills of future generations.

‘Teachers’ welfare matters to us’

Okpebholo said his administration would continue taking practical steps to improve teachers’ working conditions.

According to him, motivated and adequately supported teachers are essential to achieving meaningful progress in the education sector.

The governor said the government would therefore continue investing in teachers, schools and other aspects of the state's education system.

The Edo State Government has previously announced measures aimed at expanding the number of teachers in public schools. In January 2025, the administration approved the recruitment of 500 teachers, while the government later said more than 500 new teachers had been recruited.

Government highlights employment efforts

Speaking on efforts to address shortages in public schools, Okpebholo said his administration had regularised 5,000 contract teachers by absorbing them into the state civil service.

He also said 6,000 teachers had been recruited to strengthen staffing levels in public schools.

The governor stressed that providing school infrastructure without ensuring adequate staffing would not solve the challenges facing the education sector.

He said the administration's goal was to ensure pupils have access to qualified teachers regardless of whether they attend schools in Benin City or communities in rural areas.

The state government has also continued recruitment initiatives in technical and vocational education, including a 2025 exercise to engage qualified teachers and demonstrators for technical colleges.

Okpebholo sends message to Edo teachers

The governor congratulated teachers across Edo State and thanked them for their contribution to the development of the state.

He reiterated his administration's commitment to creating better conditions for teachers while improving schools and expanding access to quality education.

The latest message comes as Edo continues to pursue reforms in its education sector, with the state government previously announcing school renovations and additional teacher recruitment as part of efforts to strengthen public education.

“To every teacher in Edo State, I say thank you for your service. Happy World Teachers’ Day,” Okpebholo said
