Russia head coach Valery Karpin has challenged Eric Chelle’s explanation of how Nigeria fought back from 3-1 down to secure a 3-3 draw in their international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod.

The Super Eagles appeared to be heading towards defeat after Russia overturned Nigeria’s early advantage and moved two goals clear. However, Nigeria scored twice late in the second half to rescue a draw in a match that produced six goals.

Kelechi Iheanacho put Nigeria ahead before Russia responded with three goals to take control of the contest. Substitute Peter Edokpolor later pulled one goal back for the Super Eagles, while Akor Adams completed the comeback with a late equaliser.

Speaking after the match, Nigeria head coach Chelle attributed the turnaround partly to tactical changes introduced during the half-time interval.

The coach said he adjusted Nigeria’s attacking approach and sought to make better use of the spaces available to his players. His explanation suggested that the changes helped the Super Eagles become more effective in the final stages of the match.

Karpin, however, offered a different assessment when asked about Chelle’s comments during his own post-match press conference.

The Russian coach questioned what tactical changes his Nigerian counterpart was referring to and instead pointed to defensive mistakes by his own players as the main reason Russia surrendered its advantage.

Karpin's comments therefore reflected a different interpretation of the same sequence of events: while Chelle credited adjustments made by Nigeria, the Russia coach focused on his side's failure to maintain its defensive organisation after taking control of the match.

The result extended the competitive history between the two national teams to two meetings. Their previous encounter, also a friendly, ended in a 1-1 draw in Moscow in June 2025.

The latest match was particularly significant for Chelle because Nigeria entered the fixture with a squad affected by several withdrawals. A number of senior players were unavailable because of injuries and club-related issues, forcing the coach to rely on a younger group that included players with limited international experience.

The situation gave several fringe and younger players an opportunity to make an impression, with Chelle subsequently acknowledging that some of the players involved could remain in his thoughts for future Super Eagles selections.

The comeback also provided Nigeria with another opportunity to assess its squad depth ahead of more competitive assignments.

For Russia, the draw will likely be viewed as a missed opportunity after the team had established a 3-1 advantage. Karpin's assessment placed the emphasis on defensive concentration and the inability to protect a lead rather than on Nigeria's tactical intervention.

For Chelle, however, the late response offered encouragement after his team had fallen two goals behind, particularly given the number of regular players unavailable for the fixture.

The 3-3 scoreline ultimately left both sides with different talking points: Nigeria could point to its late recovery, while Russia was left to consider how a commanding position slipped away.
