The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, and was reported to the police at about 11:04 p.m., according to a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.

Preliminary findings indicate that Corporal Amos Yusuf, who was on night duty, shot his colleague, Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi, before also sustaining a fatal gunshot injury, the police said.

Officers led by the Divisional Police Officer in Ajaokuta responded to the scene. Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead. Their remains were subsequently deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.

The police said an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene as part of the evidence.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed investigation. The command said the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motive, had not been established and urged against speculation while inquiries continue.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.

The command said it would provide further information as verified details become available.
