The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has raised concerns over recent killings in the state and called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect residents.

The party made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, following a fresh violent incident in Osogbo.

The APC said it had expected the conclusion of the 2026 governorship election to reduce political and other forms of violence in the state, but argued that recent incidents showed that security concerns remained.

The party called on the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke to take further steps to address what it described as extra-judicial killings and ensure that residents can go about their activities without fear.

The statement followed a shooting incident reported in Osogbo on Friday in which two people were killed and four others injured.

According to the Osun State Police Command, the incident occurred around the Oke Baale/Owoeba area and was suspected to be connected to a clash involving cult groups. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said two people died at the scene, while four others sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Zungura, subsequently directed tactical teams to move into the area and work towards identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack. Police had not announced an arrest in connection with the incident in the reports reviewed for this article.

The latest incident comes amid other reports of violent attacks in parts of Osun in recent months. In September, police investigated a separate shooting in Osogbo in which a man identified as Adejuwon Adekunle, popularly known as Asa, was killed. The police said preliminary findings suggested that incident might also have been cult-related.

The APC argued that the recurring reports of violence were damaging the state’s image and called on security agencies to strengthen their operations.

The party also urged the police and other security services to step up surveillance and preventive measures, stressing that protecting lives and property should remain a priority.

However, the APC’s description of the incidents as “extra-judicial killings” is a political characterisation. In the latest Osogbo case, police have described the incident as a suspected cult-related shooting and said investigations are ongoing.

The party further appealed to residents and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and preventing further violence.

The recent developments have placed renewed attention on security in Osun, where police have previously reported investigations into suspected cult-related violence and other violent incidents. The police have also urged groups with grievances to use lawful means rather than resorting to violence or reprisals.

As investigations into the latest Osogbo shooting continue, the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the identities of those responsible remain matters for law enforcement to establish.
