The development, announced by the bank’s parent company, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), on October 27, 2026, is intended to make online checkout simpler by reducing the need for customers to repeatedly enter their card details.

With the service, customers can add an eligible GTBank card to Google Wallet and select Google Pay when making payments on supported websites and platforms. They can then choose their saved card and confirm the transaction.

The service can be used for eligible online purchases, including subscriptions, flight and hotel bookings, food orders, bill payments, membership renewals and other digital services, depending on whether the merchant accepts Google Pay.

GTCO said the rollout forms part of its broader effort to improve digital payment services. The group also announced that businesses using Squad, the payment gateway operated by its payments subsidiary, HabariPay, can offer Google Pay at checkout.

The integration connects customers seeking convenient payment options with businesses that accept the service, potentially making online transactions easier for both sides.

GTBank Managing Director, Mrs Miriam Olusanya, said the launch responds to customers’ growing demand for simpler and more secure ways to pay online.

Olusanya said adding GTBank debit cards to Google Wallet would allow customers to complete supported payments without repeatedly entering their card information. She added that the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to making everyday banking more convenient through technology.

Security is also a key part of the service. Google Pay uses security measures designed to help protect payment information during transactions. However, customers should continue to safeguard their devices and accounts, use trusted websites and check transaction details before confirming payments.

The service’s availability depends on card eligibility and merchant support. Google’s official payment information lists GTBank Mastercard debit cards and Mastercard prepaid cards among the supported payment methods in Nigeria. Customers should confirm whether their particular card can be added successfully before relying on it for a transaction.

The introduction of Google Pay adds another option to Nigeria’s growing digital payments market, where banks and payment companies are expanding services to make online purchases more convenient.

For GTBank customers, the main benefit is the ability to use an eligible card through Google Wallet at supported online checkouts, both locally and internationally, without having to enter card details for every purchase.
