The crash occurred on Friday, October 2, 2026, after Sopp Water Falls. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, said the incident happened at approximately 3:32 p.m.

Four vehicles were involved in the collision: a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN, a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M, a passenger bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle whose registration details were not immediately available.
Preliminary findings by the Corps pointed to brake failure and subsequent loss of control as the likely causes. However, the FRSC said a detailed investigation had been ordered to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The five injured victims were evacuated to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of those who died were taken to the mortuary at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
Emergency responders also cleared the obstruction caused by the collision and restored traffic movement along the affected section of the highway. (Vanguard)
Reacting to the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed sadness over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the families, friends and associates of the deceased. He also wished those receiving medical treatment a speedy recovery.
Mohammed directed the Corps' crash investigation team to conduct a thorough examination of the incident, with particular attention to the reported brake failure and loss of control.
He used the opportunity to remind motorists, especially commercial transport operators and drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before travelling.
The Corps Marshal also emphasised the importance of responsible driving, speed management and caution on highways, urging road users to take safety seriously.
In his message, Mohammed said the loss of 20 lives in one accident represented a tragedy for 20 families, stressing that every casualty was a person with loved ones and a future.
The crash has renewed attention on safety along the Hawan Kibo corridor, particularly the risks associated with mechanical failure on major roads.
While brake failure has been identified as a likely contributing factor, the FRSC's investigation is expected to establish the precise circumstances behind the collision.
