According to the police, the complainant, Chukwu David, alleged that Enyinnaya collected ₦650,000 from him in March 2026, claiming he could facilitate the processing and approval of a street-naming request in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The petitioner reportedly said the suspect presented himself as an experienced legal practitioner before receiving the money.
Police investigations allegedly revealed that Enyinnaya had been presenting himself as a lawyer despite lacking the necessary qualifications. The police said he admitted during interrogation that he was not a lawyer.
A search of his apartment reportedly led to the recovery of several items believed to be connected to the alleged impersonation. These included a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal, a portrait of the suspect dressed in barrister’s attire, and purported Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) certificates bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology.
The police also said they recovered a barrister’s wig and robe, court judgments and legal documents allegedly prepared by the suspect, including powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance.
The command confirmed that the suspect had been charged to court. However, the allegations have not been established by a court judgment, and the suspect remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
The Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, commended the officers involved in the investigation and urged residents to verify the professional credentials of individuals offering legal services.
She also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the police to help prevent fraud and protect people seeking legal assistance.
The case highlights the importance of confirming a legal practitioner’s credentials before paying for legal services or entrusting someone with sensitive documents and property-related transactions.
