The rescued teenager, identified as Sumaila Muhammadu, was reportedly abducted from the Onidundun area of Akinyele on October 18, 2026. Police said the operation followed intelligence received on October 22 that suspected kidnappers were demanding ransom for his release.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga directed operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Section to track the suspects and secure the victim’s release. The team worked alongside members of the Oyo Zone Vigilante Group of Nigeria.

The security team subsequently tracked the suspects to the Pipeline, Ajagba area along the Awe–Iwo Road. At about 9:30 p.m., a confrontation reportedly broke out after the suspected kidnappers opened fire on the approaching operatives.

The police said the teenager was rescued during the operation, while one suspected kidnapper was shot. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed his death, and his remains were deposited at a morgue.

Other members of the suspected gang reportedly escaped, with police believing some may have sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.

Officers also recovered an Android mobile phone and a cutlass at the scene. The items are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation as security operatives continue efforts to locate the fleeing suspects.

Following the operation, the command urged residents around the Awe–Iwo Road axis and neighbouring communities to report credible information that could assist the investigation.

The police also appealed to medical practitioners, hospital administrators and other healthcare workers to notify the authorities about patients whose injuries may be connected to the incident.

Commissioner Olugbenga reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-led operations and cooperation with relevant security groups.

He also called on residents to provide timely and reliable information to support efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and improve security across Oyo State.
