The Allied Peoples Movement governorship candidate in Ogun State, Rotimi Babajide, has criticised the impact of the Federal Government’s fuel subsidy removal, arguing that the increase in petrol prices has placed additional pressure on Nigerians without delivering enough visible relief in their daily lives.
Babajide made the comments while speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, where he discussed the economy, education and his plans for Ogun State ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
He said petrol prices of around ₦1,400 to ₦1,500 per litre had become common in parts of the country and questioned whether Nigerians were receiving corresponding benefits from the policy.
Recent market reports confirm that petrol prices rose above ₦1,400 per litre in several locations in September, with prices varying significantly between cities, filling stations and regions. In Abuja, for example, several outlets were selling petrol around ₦1,400–₦1,450 per litre, while reports from parts of the South-East put some prices around ₦1,500.
Babajide also criticised comments reportedly made by a governor during discussions about the subsidy issue, arguing that language he considered derogatory was inappropriate for a public official.
Turning to education, the APM candidate pledged to declare what he described as a state of emergency in Ogun’s education sector if elected governor in 2027.
He said the proposed intervention would be aimed at addressing what he sees as declining standards and other challenges affecting education in the state.
Babajide clarified that his proposed declaration would not involve measures such as curfews or restrictions. Instead, he said it would signal an urgent government focus on improving teaching, learning and educational infrastructure.
Among his proposals is the wider use of digital technology and modern learning facilities in schools. He said Ogun students should be equipped with skills that would enable them to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global environment.
The APM candidate also referred to the achievements of Nigerian students in international competitions as examples of what young people could accomplish when given adequate educational support.
Babajide further spoke about his plans to engage former Ogun governors, including Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, if he eventually assumes office.
He said he had been discussing with Daniel and hoped to benefit from the experience of former political leaders. His proposal is to draw on the knowledge of experienced figures while building what he described as a broader team for governance.
Babajide has previously said his proposed administration would focus on inclusive governance, infrastructure, rural development and agricultural expansion. He emerged as the APM’s Ogun governorship candidate earlier in 2026 and has continued to outline his campaign agenda ahead of the 2027 election.
The candidate also expressed support for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who is the APM’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election. Babajide cited areas such as waste management and internally generated revenue when discussing what he considers notable aspects of Makinde’s administration.
He also discussed the possibility of political cooperation among parties and groups, saying such discussions could take place at an appropriate time.
His comments form part of his campaign messaging ahead of the 2027 Ogun governorship election. Whether the proposed education reforms, economic policies and other commitments are implemented would depend on the outcome of the election and the subsequent policy and budgetary decisions of any incoming administration.
