Political activity is gathering momentum in Kwara State as the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Social Democratic Party have unveiled new state secretariats in Ilorin, signalling increased organisational activity ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NDC took over its new secretariat at 187 Lagos Road, Ilorin, on Monday, September 28, while the SDP unveiled its own facility along Fate-Basin Road two days later. The separate events brought together party leaders, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders as both parties work to strengthen their structures across the state.
At the NDC event, the party's Kwara governorship candidate, Prof. Abdulmumin Olayinka Ajia, formally handed the new secretariat over to the state executive committee led by AbdulGaniyu AbdulSalam.
Ajia said the development was intended to strengthen the party's organisation in Kwara and help resolve disagreements that had affected its internal structure.
He called on members who had taken different positions during the party's internal disagreements to work with the AbdulSalam-led executive through the appropriate party organs, describing the development as an opportunity for reconciliation and greater coordination.
Ajia also urged the party's candidates and supporters across the wards and local government areas to concentrate on building a functional political structure ahead of the elections.
The NDC candidate has previously unveiled what he calls the "Forward Kwara Agenda", outlining priorities that include security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment and economic opportunities. Recent reports also show that the party has been expanding its campaign activities and statewide mobilisation ahead of the 2027 contest.
At the SDP event on Wednesday, September 30, party leaders and supporters gathered for the unveiling of the new secretariat along Fate-Basin Road.
The event was attended by national and state-level figures, including Prince Adewole Adebayo and Usman Bugaje, according to reports. However, the status of Adebayo within the SDP remains contested: the party's national website published a statement saying he had been expelled and was not its presidential candidate, while other recent reports continue to identify him in that role.
Speaking at the opening, SDP deputy governorship candidate Funsho Kolawole Thawphic described the new secretariat as a fresh beginning for the party's activities in Kwara.
Thawphic said the party intended to present itself to residents as an alternative political platform and urged voters to consider its candidates and proposed policies ahead of the elections.
He also spoke in support of the party's governorship candidate, Dr Apaokagi, describing him as someone who had spent years supporting disadvantaged members of society. Those remarks represented the candidate's and party's political position rather than an independently established assessment.
The opening of the two secretariats comes as political parties in Kwara intensify grassroots activities, candidate coordination and internal organisation ahead of the next electoral cycle.
For the NDC, the latest development also provides an opportunity to consolidate its state structure following internal disagreements. For the SDP, the new office is expected to serve as a base for its mobilisation and campaign activities in the state.
The competing activities illustrate the growing efforts by parties outside the major established political structures to build statewide organisations and attract supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.
With campaign organisations taking shape and party structures expanding across the state, political activity in Kwara is expected to become increasingly visible as parties continue preparations for the governorship and other electoral contests.
