The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto State has called on eligible citizens to take an active part in the electoral process while maintaining confidence in the institutions responsible for conducting elections.

The appeal was contained in an Independence Day message issued by the commission’s Public Affairs Officer in Sokoto, Hassan Sarki Gendane, as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.

INEC Sokoto also announced that the collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) by registered voters would commence on October 9, 2026. The date aligns with the commission’s nationwide schedule for the collection of newly printed PVCs ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission urged eligible voters in Sokoto to take advantage of the collection exercise and ensure they obtain their cards through the designated collection arrangements.

The development comes as INEC intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections. The commission’s official voter portal currently allows registered voters to check their PVC status and identify their collection centres.

INEC Sokoto further advised members of the public to rely on the commission’s official communication channels for information about voter registration, PVC collection and other electoral activities.

The advice is intended to limit the spread of inaccurate information as preparations for the next general elections gather pace.

The commission also appealed to citizens to maintain peace, respect the law and contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

INEC Sokoto reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections in line with the Constitution and Electoral Act, while stressing the importance of ensuring that eligible citizens are able to participate in the process.

The commission encouraged voters to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly, noting that citizens are entitled to freely choose candidates of their preference during elections.

INEC also congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary and called on citizens to play their part in sustaining democratic governance.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections in participating states are scheduled for February 6, 2027, according to INEC’s published election calendar.
