The German Consulate General in Lagos has outlined four verification procedures it may use when assessing family reunification visa applications, highlighting the importance of authentic documents and accurate information throughout the process.

In an official notice published on the website of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the consulate explained that the measures are intended to establish the reliability of information provided by applicants and ensure that visa decisions comply with legal requirements.

One of the procedures is document verification. This may be required when inconsistencies appear in submitted records, particularly where names, dates of birth or other personal details do not match. The exercise helps officials establish the applicant’s identity and clarify discrepancies before making a decision.

The consulate may also conduct interviews with married couples where there are questions about the authenticity of their relationship. Such interviews are intended to establish whether the marriage is genuine and qualifies for family reunification under the applicable immigration rules.

For applications involving parent-child relationships, DNA analysis may be requested to establish biological connections where necessary. This is particularly relevant when the information or documents submitted do not sufficiently establish the claimed relationship.

The fourth procedure is age assessment, which may be considered when officials have doubts about the age of a child applying to join a parent or family member in Germany. Establishing the applicant’s age can be important because eligibility requirements differ depending on whether the individual is a minor or an adult.

The consulate stressed that applicants would be informed in advance whenever any of these additional verification measures became necessary. It also made clear that the financial responsibility for the procedures rests with the applicants, rather than the consulate.

The announcement serves as an important reminder for Nigerians preparing family reunification applications to ensure that their personal information and supporting documents are accurate, consistent and genuine.

Germany’s family reunification process allows eligible family members to join relatives who are legally resident in the country, subject to the requirements of the relevant visa category. However, applicants should understand that additional checks may be requested where officials need to establish the authenticity of documents or relationships.

The German Consulate General also warns that applications containing forged documents or false information can face serious consequences, including rejection and possible restrictions affecting future visa applications.

Applicants are therefore advised to consult the official German Missions in Nigeria website for the requirements relevant to their individual circumstances and to avoid relying solely on information circulated on social media or through unofficial agents.
