Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s training camp has continued to generate controversy, with Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre claiming that the Al-Nassr forward felt betrayed by head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo confirmed on Wednesday that he had left the national team’s camp in Copenhagen following Jesus’ press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed his departure but did not give a reason, saying the rest of the squad would continue preparations for the upcoming fixtures.

The situation developed after Ronaldo was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway. The 41-year-old had been sent out to warm up for around 20 to 30 minutes during the match but was ultimately not introduced. Jesus later acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy about the situation and admitted that he could have handled the timing of the warm-up differently.

According to Aguirre, who is a journalist with Spanish programme El Chiringuito and is known to be close to Ronaldo, the player subsequently had a private meeting with Jesus and Proença.

Aguirre claimed that Jesus apologised to Ronaldo over the decision to have him warm up for an extended period without eventually bringing him onto the pitch. He further alleged that the coach had indicated that he would acknowledge the mistake publicly.

However, those details remain an allegation from Aguirre and have not been independently established.

Jesus has offered his own account of the incident. The Portugal coach said he had originally discussed Ronaldo’s involvement with him and later decided during the Norway match that he did not need to introduce him. Jesus acknowledged that leaving Ronaldo warming up for such a long period without using him was something the player would naturally be unhappy about.

Jesus also rejected suggestions that there was a serious dispute between himself and Ronaldo. He said the pair had spoken because of the growing speculation surrounding the situation and maintained that there was no major issue that needed to be resolved.

The disagreement became more complicated after Jesus addressed the matter publicly. Ronaldo subsequently announced his decision to leave the camp, saying he would explain the reasons for his decision to the Portuguese public at the appropriate time.

Aguirre, however, maintains that the contrast between what he says happened privately and what Jesus later said publicly was the central reason for Ronaldo’s reaction. He characterised the alleged change in position as a betrayal of the Portugal captain’s expectations.

Ronaldo’s departure has also attracted reactions from members of his family, adding to the attention surrounding the dispute. Reports have also raised questions about his immediate future with the national team, although his departure from this particular camp should not by itself be treated as a confirmed retirement from international football.

Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark in the Nations League before another meeting with Norway. The Portuguese federation has said preparations for the upcoming matches will continue with the remaining players.

For now, the confirmed facts are that Ronaldo left the Portugal camp after Jesus’ press conference and a conversation with the federation president, while the more detailed account about a private apology and an alleged feeling of betrayal remains Aguirre’s version of events.

The episode has therefore left the Ronaldo–Jesus relationship under intense scrutiny, with Ronaldo himself yet to publicly provide the full explanation he said he would give in due course.
