Paris Women’s Fashion Week opened on Monday with striking debuts from South African luxury label MaXhosa Africa and Canadian fashion house Matières Fécales, adding fresh colour and creativity to an industry currently facing challenging commercial conditions.
The Spring/Summer 2027 edition features 67 scheduled runway shows, alongside numerous private presentations, exhibitions and fashion events taking place across the French capital.
The opening day brought emerging and established names into the spotlight, while some of the industry's biggest fashion houses prepare to unveil their latest collections later in the week.
Dior and Saint Laurent Set for the Spotlight
Major French fashion houses Christian Dior and Saint Laurent are scheduled to present their collections on Tuesday.
For Saint Laurent, the show could carry additional significance amid reports that Belgian designer Anthony Vaccarello, who has led the label's creative direction for roughly a decade, could be preparing to leave.
If the reports materialise, his potential departure would come amid wider changes across the luxury fashion industry, as major brands reassess their creative leadership and commercial strategies.
Other creative directors have also faced speculation about their positions.
At Balenciaga, Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli has reportedly come under pressure following difficulties in maintaining the sales performance recorded under his predecessor, Demna.
Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Chloé artistic director Chemena Kamali, who joined the French fashion house in 2023, is also facing questions over the label's profitability.
Luxury Market Adjusts After Post-Covid Boom
The changes come against the backdrop of a difficult period for the global luxury fashion market.
Pascal Morand, executive president of the French Haute Couture and Fashion Federation, described the industry as having experienced a strong post-pandemic period before reaching a peak in 2023 and subsequently entering a more stable but challenging phase.
He noted that major luxury groups, independent brands and emerging designers are experiencing the changing market in different ways as consumer behaviour, sales channels and business models evolve.
MaXhosa Africa Brings South African Heritage to Paris
Despite the challenges facing the sector, Paris Fashion Week is also highlighting brands finding new opportunities.
Among them is MaXhosa Africa, the South African luxury knitwear label founded in 2010 by textile designer Laduma Ngxokolo.
Ngxokolo, whose designs draw inspiration from South African culture and Xhosa traditions, has previously presented his collections privately in Paris. His inclusion in the official Paris Fashion Week programme marks a significant step for the label.
The designer has also attracted an international celebrity following, with Michelle Obama and Beyoncé among those associated with his work.
Matières Fécales Continues Its Rapid Rise
Canadian label Matières Fécales is another unconventional name attracting attention in Paris.
Although the brand made its first appearance in March 2025, it has quickly gained visibility after dressing several celebrities and high-profile personalities.
The label's provocative French name translates to “faecal matter,” a deliberate choice by its founders to place greater emphasis on the clothing itself rather than conventional luxury branding.
A Week of Fashion, Change and Reinvention
With dozens of designers scheduled to showcase their Spring/Summer 2027 collections, Paris Fashion Week is providing a platform for both established luxury houses and younger labels seeking to redefine contemporary fashion.
The opening day is scheduled to conclude with the Matières Fécales show at 7 p.m. local time, following presentations from Julie Kegels, Weinsanto and Hodakova.
As the week progresses, attention will turn to how major fashion houses balance creativity with the commercial pressures facing the luxury industry—and whether emerging designers can capture consumers' attention in an increasingly competitive market.
