Nigeria is set to make another appearance on the global junior table tennis stage as Umar Olawale Ayoola and Elizabeth Chikamnario Emilike prepare to represent the country at the 2026 ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge in Sheffield, United Kingdom.
The prestigious development programme is scheduled for October 12 to 18 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield and will bring together 36 young players from 26 member associations across the world. The event is organised under the International Table Tennis Federation’s Hopes Programme, which identifies and develops promising players at the Under-12 level.
The ITTF describes the World Hopes Week & Challenge as the final stage of its year-long talent identification pathway. Players progress through national and continental Hopes programmes before the strongest prospects are selected for the global event in Sheffield.
Ayoola and Emilike secured their places following their performances at the ITTF Hopes Week & Challenge Africa 2026 in Accra, Ghana. Ayoola finished second in the boys’ category, while Emilike placed fourth in the girls’ event. Those results helped earn both Nigerians places in the final World Hopes field.
The official ITTF player list identifies Ayoola as Umar Olawale Ayoola and Emilike as Elizabeth Chikamnario Emilike, confirming their inclusion among the 36 players selected for the Sheffield programme.
The week will combine intensive technical training with a Challenge competition. However, the assessment will not be based solely on match results. According to the ITTF, coaches will also consider players’ technical ability, attitude during training and overall development potential. The strongest performers can earn selection to the Hopes Team and gain a pathway into the ITTF High Performance programme.
Nigeria will be represented alongside other African nations, including Egypt, Tunisia and Uganda. Egypt has Zeina Farouk and Adam Lashin in the field, Tunisia is represented by Ritej Charif, while Uganda has Joseph Francis Sebatindira.
The Sheffield gathering will also feature young players from countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, England, Finland, France, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Romania, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.
The event represents an important stage in the development of the young players, giving them an opportunity to train alongside international prospects and work with elite coaches while experiencing competition at a global level.
The ITTF Hopes Programme has operated for more than 15 years and is designed to create a pathway from grassroots talent identification to high-performance table tennis. The federation says about 1,600 young players have participated in the programme worldwide since its launch in 2009.
For Ayoola and Emilike, the Sheffield opportunity follows their strong showing in Africa and gives the Nigerian duo a chance to test themselves against some of the world's most promising young players.
With the global Hopes event set for October 12–18, attention will now turn to Sheffield as Nigeria’s two young prospects take another step in their developing international table tennis careers.
