A woman identified as Rashidat has approached the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, Sarafatu.

Rashidat told the court that she had endured years of what she described as neglect, frequent arguments, and physical violence, while also accusing her husband of failing to adequately provide for her and their children.

According to her account, the marriage had brought her little peace from the beginning, with her husband's alleged lack of commitment to his responsibilities placing significant pressure on the family.

She alleged that Sarafatu regularly failed to provide enough food and other necessities for the household, leaving her to work extensively to meet the family's needs.

Rashidat further claimed that disagreements between them frequently escalated into physical confrontations. She alleged that her husband punched her during some of their arguments, leaving her with injuries.

She also told the court that neighbours had repeatedly intervened in their disputes but that their efforts had not resolved the problems within the marriage.

Rashidat therefore asked the court to dissolve the union and grant her custody of their children. She also requested that Sarafatu be directed to contribute to the children's upkeep, particularly their feeding, education and healthcare.

In addition, she sought an order restricting her husband from threatening her or interfering with her privacy.

The woman also claimed that the marriage did not include some of the customary marital requirements, alleging that the expected rites were not performed and that her bride price was not paid.

Sarafatu did not oppose the request for dissolution of the marriage. However, he presented a different account of what led to the breakdown of the relationship.

The husband accused Rashidat of having a relationship with another man while they were still married. He said he discovered the relationship and reported the matter to her family, but alleged that she continued seeing the man.

Sarafatu further claimed that Rashidat eventually left their matrimonial home after becoming pregnant by the other man.

He asked the court to grant him custody of their children, arguing that their mother could have a negative influence on them.

The allegations made by both parties remain claims presented during the court proceedings. The reports reviewed do not indicate that the court made findings confirming the accusations of domestic violence, neglect or infidelity.

The case highlights the difficult circumstances that can arise when disputes over family responsibilities, alleged abuse and accusations of infidelity become part of matrimonial proceedings.

Both parties have indicated their willingness to end the marriage, while the issue of custody and responsibility for the children's welfare remains a key point raised before the court.
