A fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in Abuja affected 21 shops and one vehicle on Friday, October 2, 2026, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office said its Emergency Response and Ambulance Bay received a distress call about the incident at approximately 11:15 a.m., prompting the immediate mobilisation of emergency response agencies to the market.

The Federal Fire Service and other relevant responders were deployed to the scene following the alert. NEMA personnel also assisted with crowd management while firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.

A preliminary assessment by the agency found that 21 shops and one vehicle had been affected by the fire. However, NEMA reported that no casualties were recorded during the incident.

Emergency responders subsequently dampened the affected area to reduce the possibility of a secondary outbreak and further spread of the fire.

NEMA also reported that some valuable items were recovered from the affected shops during the emergency operation, potentially helping to reduce the losses suffered by some of the affected traders.

Operations at the scene were brought to an end at about 1:40 p.m., after responders had brought the situation under control.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to coordinating emergency response operations and supporting communities affected by disasters in collaboration with relevant response organisations.

NEMA’s mandate includes coordinating disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response efforts across Nigeria, with emergency incidents such as market fires forming part of the agency’s broader disaster-management responsibilities.

The immediate cause of Friday’s fire had not been established in the reports reviewed, and no official figure for the financial value of property lost was provided by NEMA.
