The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a man identified as Zayyanu Halilu over the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl at Airport Bridge Taxi Park in Abuja.
The arrest was made on Friday, October 2, 2026, by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit during a routine patrol of the area, according to the police.
FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday.
The command said officers became suspicious after noticing a navy blue Volkswagen vehicle with tinted windows parked at the taxi park. Police said the vehicle appeared to be shaking, prompting the officers to approach and inspect it.
According to the police, the officers discovered Halilu inside the vehicle with the minor and immediately intervened. The girl was rescued, while the suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had allegedly taken the girl to the same location on previous occasions and sexually abused her. The command further alleged that the girl had been threatened against disclosing the abuse.
Police said a medical examination subsequently indicated that the girl was approximately three months pregnant. The victim is receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment, according to the command.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case. The police said he would be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.
The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the safety, whereabouts and welfare of children under their care.
The command also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or individuals to the police.
The case adds to ongoing concerns around the protection of children from sexual abuse and exploitation. The police have not reported any court finding against the suspect, meaning the allegations remain subject to investigation and due legal process.
